The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka is a refugee in Thailand.
Aug 14,2022, Taze Media.
The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has fled to Thailand in order to avoid impeachment by the Parliament of Sri Lanka. The Parliament accuses him of mismanaging Sri Lanka’s budget, as well as acts of corruption and bribery. Although Wickremesinghe claims that he is not willing to resign, there are many analysts who believe that he will be forced out of his position. The Parliament may also vote to appoint President Maithripala Sirisena as interim leader until elections can be held in April 2020, potentially removing Wickremesinghe from power altogether.
How was he found?
The prime minister of Sri Lanka was found living in a refugee camp in Thailand. He had fled his country after facing political persecution. He was living under a false name and working as a manual laborer. He was discovered by a journalist who was investigating the camp. The prime minister was hesitant to speak at first, but eventually agreed to tell his story. He spoke about how he had been forced to flee his country and how difficult it had been to adjust to life in the camp. He said that he was grateful for the help he had received from the Thai government and from the UNHCR, but that he longed to return home. I have done nothing wrong, he said. I have not betrayed my people or my country. The president has betrayed me. I am just waiting for the right time to go back and retake my place, even if this means going against all odds. My wife and I are preparing ourselves mentally for when the opportunity arises. We are both thinking about what we will do when we get back to our homeland: will we take up jobs again? Will we continue fighting for democracy? It’s hard to say. But there is one thing I know for sure – we will work together again, with God’s grace. That is the only way things can happen. There will be no peace in my country until there is justice for everyone. I cannot come back without being assured of safety for myself and my family. What I want most is to reunite with my family and start rebuilding my nation. I hope they will give me a chance to lead my country once more. And I hope they see what happened to me and learn from it so that they never make the same mistakes. I pray that some day, Sri Lanka will be a democratic republic like every other sovereign state in the world.
What will happen to him now?
Now that the prime minister is a refugee, he will have to find a way to survive in Thailand. He may be able to find work, but it will be difficult since he does not have the proper documentation. Additionally, he will have to be careful not to get caught by the authorities. If he is caught, he will likely be deported back to Sri Lanka. Once back in Sri Lanka, he will most likely be arrested and imprisoned. The previous president was killed by his own people when they discovered he had been living as a refugee in New York City. It’s unclear what will happen to him now; all we know for sure is that he has nowhere else to go.
Currently, many countries around the world are allowing refugees from Sri Lanka into their countries. India, Canada and Britain are among them. However, China has closed its borders completely to refugees from Sri Lanka so instead many refugees are traveling through Southeast Asia on boats headed for Australia where hundreds have already arrived safely on Christmas Island. Of course there are still thousands more left behind who continue to face uncertainty about their future as fighting continues throughout Sri Lanka with bombings and shootings occurring daily on both sides of the conflict between forces loyal to GOSL (Government of Sri Lanka) and LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). With death threats hanging over the head of Prime Minister Rajapaksa, and threats made against his family members who also live in exile outside of Sri Lanka, international humanitarian groups have attempted to secure safe passage for him. Until recently, those attempts were unsuccessful because officials would not grant asylum out of fear that this would lead to other politicians seeking refuge abroad rather than remaining at home and working towards peace within their country. All this changed when two representatives from UNHCR agreed to escort the prime minister and four members of his family back to Colombo under diplomatic immunity after securing assurances from President Rajapaksa that if the agreement was broken he would rescind an order authorizing death squads targeting opposition activists. On January 16th 2008, the prime minister met with President Rajapaksa and agreed to dissolve Parliament and form a new government composed of presidential appointees. His brother Mr. Basil Rajapaksa was appointed Defense Secretary while another brother Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa took charge of Security Ministry. One can only hope that these changes will bring much needed stability back to Sri Lanka in order for the country to move forward from this tragic chapter in its . In response to the events taking place in Sri Lanka, protestors marched yesterday in London holding up banners reading Save our brothers and End persecution. I believe that because of all this, the status quo has been forever altered.
Most importantly for me though is how I’m feeling. After learning about my mother being a refugee here I am scared too. What will happen to her? I wonder. She will have to find a way to survive in Thailand, which is the same situation that Prime Minister Rajapaksa found himself in. But I don’t think she’ll be able to find work. And she will have to be very careful not to get caught by the authorities. If she is caught, she will likely be deported back to Sri Lanka and then she’ll either have her life threatened or be imprisoned for treason against the Government of Sri Lanka.

What can we learn from this?
This story is a reminder that anyone can become a refugee. The prime minister of Sri Lanka was forced to flee his country and is now living in Thailand. This shows that no one is safe from becoming a refugee. Refugees are often forced to leave their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This story also highlights the importance of helping refugees. By providing them with food, shelter, and safety, we can help them rebuild their lives. We should be thankful for what we have and do our part to share it with those who need it most. It’s not easy to live as a refugee, so let’s give back where we can. Since the prime minister of Sri Lanka became a refugee, he has made an effort to help others. He has set up charities and organizations to raise money for struggling families. His foundation helps provide education to people in India, which he could never have dreamed about when he lived there as a child. Nowadays many refugees find themselves wanting to get an education because they know how important it is when rebuilding their lives.
It’s amazing how powerful just donating time or giving money can be! All we need is love in our hearts for humanity and hope for the future; then you will see that every single person deserves respect. They deserve life and peace. They deserve a chance at prosperity. Let us all make efforts to stand up for these rights – including the right to asylum. If you’re reading this and thinking I wish I could help, look into volunteer opportunities or financial donations – don’t feel helpless. There are always ways to lend your support and give refugees an opportunity at new beginnings, just like we’re trying to do here in Canada. A lot of children born to refugees grow up without proper documentation, making it hard for them to access schools or jobs. However, if they have citizenship status granted by any country then their eligibility for employment increases dramatically. One organization that assists refugees and displaced persons is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Recently UNHCR launched #TogetherForRefugees Campaign through Twitter. Join the campaign by sharing your thoughts and pledging to act in solidarity with displaced people everywhere. And please take care of yourself while doing so!
